The fly bench

As you can see (if you have been here before), things are starting to change here at the bench page. It is now into September and I finally have some time to begin to make this page work as I intended it to. The photo above is a shot of my 'fly desk. As you can see, it doesn't take a lot of room if you are well organized. What you can't see in this photo is to the right of this desk are two small file cabinets (two drawer) in which I store things like necks and saddles, tails of various sorts, rabbit strips, and all of those synthetic materials that you need. On top of the file cabinets I have my drying wheel and a few other tools and gadgets. The whole area is only 6'x7'; again, organization is the key.

This is probably larger than the average tier needs or has room for. A good friend of mine and one of the best tiers around has a whole bedroom in his house solely for fly tying and there still doesn't seem to be enough room. Another guide I know does all of his tying at the kitchen table. Any space is fine as long as it works for you! What I plan to do here is show interested tiers the flies that I and other guides here in the lower keys are using and what we find  works for us. The flies that I will be tying are the ones that I am using for bonefish, permit, tarpon, barracudas, and sharks. I am not the creator of most of the flies that you will see here. Every once in a while, I come up with something original but most of the time, its a fly that someone else came up with. There are several that will be here that although they were someone else's design, I modified it to suit my needs here in the keys. I tell you all this so that everyone is clear that I am not trying to take credit for anyone else's design. Whenever possible I will give the originators name if I know it, even if its a fly that I have modified for a special use. I do not, and will not sell any flies that I tie.  The sole purpose of this site is to share information that is available from many other sources, and to maybe give other tiers a few ideas. This is just a hobby for me, one that saves me money.

As I put new flies up, I will link them below. If you have any questions or comments, contact me via the methods listed below. I would like to have your feed back and if you have a fly that you would like to see on this page, send it to me with some simple tying instructions and I'll see if I can include it. If you're sending photos via an e-mail, please send them in .jpeg format.

Happy tying!
